Off to a Good Start: Gardening Seeds

For a gardener who wants to start from scratch, there are certain methods to use when gardening seeds that are not used if starting with seedlings or more mature plants. In order to garden seeds, there are certain gardening accessories that are needed in order to be successful. Most gardening tips say to garden seeds indoors so that the seeds have a chance to germinate and grow for a time before having to face not only the elements outside, but also the creatures that can eat them and damage them, such as insects, birds and deer.

Steps to Starting Seeds

The first step to gardening seeds is to decide what types of plants to grow in the garden and then purchase those seeds from a reliable supplier, such as a gardening catalogue, nursery or gardening supply store. Most types of seeds can be found this way without having to be special ordered. If it is a rarer or exotic species of plant, then it may have to be special ordered by the seed supply company. In addition, the gardener needs to decide if she wants to do organic gardening, and if so, if she wants to make sure the seeds she purchases are organic as well. Organic seeds have to be purchased through an organic seed company in most cases since typical gardening supply stores and nurseries do not carry them

The next step to gardening seeds is to decide what type of soil to use. There is plenty of potting soil that is readily available, but when potting seeds, it is important for the soil to be high quality so that the seeds have enough nutrients for good growth. The soil should also drain well yet hold moisture so that the seeds can get just the right amount of water. If the gardener wants to do organic seed gardening, then the potting soil needs to be organic, with no foreign chemicals used to add the nutrients. This is usually a little more expensive than the other potting soils.

Containers of all different sizes can be used to garden seeds as long as they are able to drain. Egg cartons and butter containers can be used as long as there are holes in the bottom so that the water can fully drain out. In addition, these containers need to be washed out well before planting the seeds in them to prevent mold or bacteria from contaminating and killing the seeds. The best way to do this is to wash them out and then disinfect with a bleach solution.

Finally, sunlight indoors is usually too weak to adequately garden seeds so an artificial light source must be used. Fluorescent lights should be used in order to promote strong and healthy seed growth, whether it is rows of lights or a regular light fixture with fluorescent bulbs in it.

Air Conditioning: A Danger To The Environment

In countries where the sun shines brightly and hotly it is hard to live without air conditioning. However, it would be wrong to assume that air conditioning is only about making the temperature cool enough to live comfortably though cooling is the essential function of such appliances. In fact, an air conditioner processes air in order to keep the temperature at a certain level of cooling or heating and in doing so will internally either heat or cool the air before ventilating it out into the room.

New York Stock Exchange

The popularity of air conditioning only rose in the early part of the twentieth century when it was used to ensure that the temperature in workplaces was cool enough to allow the workforce to work better and be more productive. Later on it was adapted for use in offices as well as in homes. In fact, the first building to be air conditioned was the New York Stock Exchange and that air conditioning allowed stock brokers to do their business in what was at the time considered truly luxurious environment.

As a matter of fact, air conditioning of the New York Stock Exchange helped boost the productivity of that August institution and this in turn resulted in making the economy as a whole a lot more productive and robust as well. It did not take long before air conditioning began to be more popular and anyone that could afford it began to install air conditioners in their homes and offices. Of course, the early air conditioners were very expensive and so not everyone could afford to own one.

Since air conditioning can help to remove humidity it has certainly found widespread acceptance in countries which experience very hot and humid weather conditions. However, an air conditioner is not very environmentally friendly and it also consumes a lot of electricity. Thinning of the ozone layer is thought to have been caused by the widespread use of air conditioners; however, modern air conditioners do not cause as much harm to the environment as did the early models. Still, there is a lot more than can be done to improve this aspect to air conditioning.

Whenever the temperatures rise to a degree that living indoors becomes unbearable there is an urgent need to make things cool enough in order to work better as well as to relax and sleep. Use of central air conditioning is one way of ensuring that you can improve your productivity as well as enjoy greater relaxation and also get to sleep well during the hot season.

A Cost Effective Choice: Water Filter Replacement Cartridge

Water filter replacement cartridges can cost anywhere from five to twenty dollars according to the type of replacement filter. This seems expensive, however, the buyer must also keep in mind that filters that have to be replaced the most often are found in pitchers and other portable devices, and these only have to be replaced approximately every three months. Considering that bottled water costs on average about five dollars for a twenty four pack and that pack can be gone in less than a week, which means the consumer is paying at least thirty dollars a month on purified water. That means in the time it takes to replace a five to twenty dollar filter for a water filtration unity, the bottled water consumer has paid almost one hundred dollars on water.

Types of Cartridges

There are three basic types of water filter replacement cartridges on the market today. The most common of these cartridges are used in water pitchers and other portable water filtration devices. Water filter replacement cartridges are also becoming more popularly used in refrigerators to purify the water in the door unit and ice maker.

Reverse osmosis water filter replacement cartridges are usually the more expensive ones on the market. The reason for this is that the membrane has to be carefully formed so that the holes in it are only big enough for a water molecule to get through and no other substances if possible. These membranes are delicate and must be formed and packed in a specific way. Also, reverse osmosis water filter replacement cartridges are found in more than portable systems, such as point of entry systems and under the sink systems that allow more water to pass through them, thus requiring a different and more advanced water replacement filter.

Another type of water filter replacement cartridge is an absorption cartridge, which uses carbon or granularly activated charcoal. These are normally the types of cartridges that Whirlpool water filter cartridges are made of to go in the doors and ice makers of refrigerators to purify the water that comes out of them. This type of cartridge removes or reduces chlorine in the water which makes it taste better, and also removes other particle matter as well as organic matter such as pesticides.

The third type is the particulate water filter replacement cartridge which acts in much the same was as the one mentioned above. It removes sand, bacteria and pathogens from the water.

Choosing the Best Plants: Gardening Nurseries

Gardening nurseries are some of the best places to find gardening seeds, seedlings, mature plants and also wonderful places to seek advice about any type of gardening problem that might be encountered. Sometimes gardening nurseries can be expensive, especially when compared to gardening catalogues where there can be some wonderful sales and offers on various gardening supplies. However, gardening nurseries usually provide that personal touch that is needed when seeking out just the perfect plants for a garden. In addition, they will usually guarantee the more expensive plants up to a certain length of time because they are experts in the gardening field.

Seeds or Plants

Talking to a professional in a gardening nursery can help a gardener to decide whether starting seeds or choosing mature plants are the best option according to what he wants to do in his garden. Gardening nurseries usually supply seeds, seedlings and mature plants, so the options are usually wide open. One part of a gardening nursery is usually a greenhouse where the seeds can be started in a much protected environment so that they can gain strength and be planted as seedlings with more assurance of success, especially for beginning gardeners.

Gardening nurseries also provide exotic types of plants that have to be grown in a greenhouse environment. Some gardening nurseries specialize in one particular area of gardening, such as only vegetables and fruits, or only rose bushes, but most nurseries sell a more varied supply of plants and seeds. The workers in the nurseries can usually advise the gardeners what types of plants work the best together, which ones are annuals or perennials, when certain types of flowers bloom, and what fruits and vegetables grow best in that particular climate.

In addition to plants and seeds, gardening nurseries also usually sell some of the other supplies needed to keep the plants and seeds healthy such as mulch, fertilizer and pesticides. Nursery workers can usually give great advice on what types of these different products work best depending on the problem being encountered. In addition, there are organic gardening nurseries that specialize in all natural growing techniques and products so that no foreign chemicals are used either in the mulches or pesticides, or in growing the plants or producing the seeds that they sell in the store. Organic gardening nurseries can also advise gardeners on how to start their own compost piles and convert their gardening style to organic.

How to Choose a Water Filter Cartridge

There are different types of water filter cartridges to choose from on the market and each one fits a different system and filters for different particles. These are water filter replacement cartridges that can be used in refrigerator water and ice making units, water pitchers as well as water filtration systems that filter higher quantities of water. Water filter cartridges can come in multi-cartridge packs, which are usually less expensive than buying a single cartridge at a time. Water filter cartridges can range from five dollars up to twenty or more, depending on the type of cartridge and the amount of time the cartridge is supposed to last before replacement.

Types of Cartridges

The most common types of cartridges are those that are made for absorption types or water filtration systems. These cartridges are filled with carbon or granular activated charcoal, which is the substance used to absorb the contaminates in the water. These cartridges are great for absorbing chlorine, which causes a bad taste in the water, as well as removing or reducing other particle matter or organic matter such as pesticides. These water filter cartridges can be found in pitcher types of filtration devices as well as in refrigeration units for the water and ice maker.

Another type of water filter cartridge is the micro filtration or particulate filter. This type of filter is also used in pitcher devices as well as water and ice makers in refrigerators. This water filter cartridge removes particles from the water such as sand, bacteria and pathogens. It is also used in portable units such as are taken on camping and hiking trips to cleanse that type of water.

Reverse osmosis water filter cartridges are another type of water purification system replacement cartridge. This type of filtration device can be found in more advanced units that serve to purify larger amounts of water. They use a thin membrane that has microscopic holes in it that only allow water molecules to come through it. That way it cleans out chemicals, metals and minerals from the water supply. These types of water filter cartridges are found also in portable units in addition to refrigeration units for water and ice.

Water filter cartridges have to be replaced on a regular basis, according to the manufacturer’s specifications. If they are not replaced regularly they can become clogged and not function properly anymore. Some clogged filters can even release more toxins into the water, making it more impure than it is unfiltered.

Plants and Gardening: How to Choose a Garden

There are so many different types of plants in gardening it can be an overwhelming choice for anyone when going into a gardening nursery to choose plants for their garden. There are different categories of plants, some of which can be mixed together, especially in landscape gardening, to create the various effects desired by the gardener. In addition, there are certain plants in gardening that can be mixed together in gardens to help each other out, such as with pests, or attracting ‘good’ insects to help with fertilization or pest issues.

Types

One category of plants in gardening is roses, which are some of the most coveted flowers in the gardening world. Rose gardens are beautiful and there are many different varieties to choose from that grow well according to the different climates. For instance, most roses enjoy full sunlight for the majority of the day, however most varieties of white roses tend to enjoy shade for at least the afternoon hours in order to grow to potential.

Another category of plants in gardening are the annuals or bi-annuals, which only grow for a season before they have to be replaced. These plants are usually used as filler plants to accent the focal points in a landscape garden. Since they only grow for one or two seasons, they can be replaced with the same or other types of annuals so that the look of the garden also changes from season to season.

Perennials are plants that come up from season to season and bloom at different times of year. They are a fun category of plants in gardening because if chosen correctly, a gardener can have a garden of flowers where something is blooming during practically every season of the year.

Plants in gardening also include grasses that can be used to line the edges of gardens or as filler to keep out the weeds around the various other plants and flowers. Vines can also be used as filler in gardens, which are also nice if there is a wall or trellis that the vines can climb on, creating a nice backdrop for the garden.

Besides flowering plants and filler, there are different kinds of fruit and vegetable gardening plants to choose from. Some of these plants can also be very decorative, depending on the time that they are blooming. Shrubs are another gardening plant that can be used to line gardens or be used as a backdrop in a garden setting.

Take Pure Water Anywhere: Portable Reverse Osmosis Water Filter

Portable reverse osmosis water filters are valuable in a variety of situations where pure water is needed. There are different types of devices which all need a water filter cartridge in order to work. These devices have changed over the years from a particulate filter or absorption filter to a portable reverse osmosis water filter, which seems to be the most effective and long lasting of all.

Growth in the Portable Water Filter Market

Portable water filter devices were the first to come onto the market as water purification systems. They normally used absorption filters, which were inexpensive and easy to use and replace. These filters showed an instant difference in the drinking water because they remove chlorine which has a strong, distinct taste.

Other portable water filter devices were focused more on camping and backpacking needs, so they were microfiltration units that could be taken into the backwoods and were useful in filtering water from streams, removing the sand, bacteria and pathogens that might be residing in the water, such as Giardia, that could make the camper sick.

Most recently to market are the portable reverse osmosis water filter systems. These systems use a thin membrane that has small holes in it that only allow water molecules to pass through it. This allows the water to come out free from chemicals, metals, minerals and other contaminates.

These portable reverse osmosis water filter units come in all shapes and sizes. Normally, in home use, the portable reverse osmosis water filter units are in the form of carafes or pitchers so that a fairly large amount of water can be purified and stored at a time, while still being manageable to carry. On the camping and backpacking front, these systems are light and easy to pack so that the camper can take it with him wherever he travels to have clean water. This saves him on packing water in the pack, which is awkward and heavy, especially for longer trips.

Other Filtration Systems

Although portable reverse osmosis water filter systems are handy and easy to use, they also do not provide much purified water at a time. Thus, other systems have been developed to provide more purified water so that it is available at all times. One example of this is the countertop reverse osmosis water filtration system that hooks to the faucet and purifies water into a tank that sits on the counter.

Creating a Piece of Art through Landscape Gardening

Landscape gardening provides an artistic outlet for gardeners that other types of gardening do not. Landscape gardening allows the gardener to plan the flow of the yard so that every piece of it accents the others and work together to create a beautiful painting of live color and texture through the plants and gardening accents used. In addition, the landscape gardens change in form during the different seasons of the year so that new annuals can be added during the different times of year to create a new look to the yard throughout the year.

Planning

Landscape gardening takes a lot of planning and research in order to produce the desired effect. The great thing in working with plants is that they grow and change and have to be replaced, so a mistake at one point is quickly forgotten in a new season of the year. In addition, nature’s palette of colors really goes together in surprising combinations that would not typically be used in other design situations, such as fashion or interior design. However, it nature, somehow the colors blend perfectly into a beautiful garden that is magnificent to behold.

The first thing to think about when planning landscape gardening is what the flow and pattern of the garden is going to be, which is normally called creating the ‘bones’ of the garden. Many gardeners take the layout of the house and yard and draw in the concept of the landscape gardens before actually laying it out with the various materials, such as path work. Other landscape gardeners are able to picture the design in their heads so that they do not have to lay it out on paper before creating the garden bones through paths and trees that form the outlines of the different parts of the landscape garden.

The next step is to decide on the focal points of the landscape garden; in other words, where does the gardener want a viewer’s eyes drawn when he is looking at the garden. This can be done in a variety of ways through the use of color, texture and size of the various plants that will be used. Larger and bolder types of plants and flowers are usually used as focal points in landscape gardens since they naturally lend themselves to that task. Once the focal points are decided on, then the accent or filler plants can be chosen so that they accent the focal points through the textures and colors that they add to the landscape garden.

A Cost Effective Choice: Countertop Reverse Osmosis Water Filter

Countertop reverse osmosis water filters are a cost effective option for purifying water. These systems run anywhere from fifty to three hundred dollars. When compared to the price of buying a pack of bottled water every week or more often, which ends up costing at a minimum twenty five dollars per month, a fifty dollar system pays for itself within, at most, a two month’s time period. In addition, there is the convenience of having purified water right at the faucet, rather than having to go to the store in order to be sure of the water being used.

Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration

Countertop reverse osmosis water filters use a membrane that has microscopic holes in it. These holes only allow water molecules to pass through to the other side, thus allowing purified water. Chemicals, metals and minerals get caught in the membrane, so the pollutants are weeded out.

The nice feature with countertop reverse osmosis water filters is that they can be hooked up by an individual without the help of a plumber. These systems hook up to the faucet rather than having to be hooked to the water pipe under the sink, so an individual with common household tools can easily hook up the system and get started. In addition, the tank for the countertop reverse osmosis water filter hold much more water than the pitcher or other portable reverse osmosis water filters, so it maintains a consistent supply of pure water for an entire household to use.

Other Types of Filtration

There are two types of water filtration systems that have been on the market the longest and are most common. One of these is the absorption water filtration system in which carbon or charcoal is used to absorb contaminates from the water. This system is great for removing things like chlorine that make the water taste bad, and is sometimes used in conjunction with reverse osmosis water filtration systems to remove the chlorine from the water before it enters a unit such as a countertop reverse osmosis water filter. The membranes in reverse osmosis filters are sensitive to chlorine and can be damaged by it, decreasing their life.

The other type of filtration that is common is a microfiltration unit that filters out sand, bacteria and other particulate matter from the water, including Giardia. These units used to be very popular as camping filters, sometimes paired with absorption systems to remove as many contaminates as possible from the water on a campsite.

Getting Started: Gardening Supplies

New gardeners often need a ‘how to’ guide in order to get started in gardening, especially if they are starting from scratch, rather than landscape gardening where the plants are already grown, wanting to grow their garden from seeds. It is often easier to get seeds started inside since there are less insects and animals that could steal the seeds or disturb the soil where the seeds are planted. In addition, until the seeds have gotten a good start in growing so that they have more of a sturdy root base and more mature leaves, they are also very susceptible to the weather, insects and other animals who love to munch on new seedlings.

Starting Seeds

There are several types of gardening supplies that are needed in order to grow seeds from scratch. First the new seeds will need a solid base in which to grow that is full of nutrients that will help them to mature and be healthy. The best soil to use is potting mix which tends to hold water well, yet still give the drainage needed for potted plants, which is important for the seeds. Potting mix is also full of nutrients that the soil from outside is unlikely to have on its own without being mixed with a strong mulch base. Even with good mulch, potting soil is still the best gardening supply for starting seeds.

The next gardening supply that is needed is some sort of container or containers in which to plant the seeds. These containers do not have to be bought at the store; they can be containers that formerly held food products or other supplies, such as egg cartons or butter containers. If the gardening supplies were formerly used for other purposes, it is important that they be well cleaned before use with the seeds since any types of mold can kill the seeds before they have a chance to grow. A strong bleach solution is usually the best answer to cleaning the containers and killing all possible molds or bacteria.

Plastic bags or some other type of cover that is see through so that light can get to the seeds is another important gardening supply for starting seeds since it creates a mini-greenhouse in which the seeds can get their start. The plastic keeps the moisture and heat in so that it creates the humid, warm environment that new seeds flourish in. Besides these gardening supplies, the only other things needed are the seeds to be planted and the water and light source for them to grow.
