Being Safe On Your Vacation with Personal Security

Millions of Americans take a vacation nearly every year, alone, with a spouse, or with the whole family. But few take the proper precautions to protect their personal security at home and on the road. Here are some tips in order to keep your personal security safe.

Personal Security On The Road

If you are traveling for a long time, notify family members when you leave and when you are expected to return. Have a friend or family member pick up your mail and check your house. You may have pets or plants they will need to check on as well.

To make sure your personal security is being looked out for, check departure times for trains and planes before you begin your travels. This way you won’t get stuck in the wrong terminals and put yourself at risk getting lost or losing personal items. Also, when you are traveling, protect your personal security by sitting near aisles or doors, if possible. Always know the location of emergency exits and alarms.

When you are traveling, it is important to keep personal security in mind. Try not to sleep on public transportation. This can open you up to theft. Also, consider investing clothing and accessories that are specially made in order to conceal important documents such as your passport, money, and credit cards. It is important to keep money in more than one place on your person, so that if you are robbed to can hand over some cash, and they will not get everything, including the passports and credit cards.

If you need to travel with valuables, keep them out of sight from the public and keep the luggage that contains them close to you. Always make sure that your can see the luggage and if someone does try to take your bag, just let it go.

Your personal security is more important that your valuables, so make sure you do not fight thief. You do not know if they are carrying a weapon and you really don’t want to find out. The best thing to do is to research the area where you are going to be traveling and make sure that you can blend in to the crowd. Don’t wear blue jeans everyday in the place where wearing something like blue jeans is not common. Try to blend in as much as possible and you will be taking and extra step in protecting your personal security.

Personal Security and Training Should Also Include Awareness

With the number of crimes committed against individuals increasing more and more people are looking for personal security and training to protect themselves and their family from attack. In the most recent statistics released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, robberies, burglaries and rape are on the rise and being able to recognize the situations in which these types of crimes most often occur is a major part of personal security and training. Additionally, learning how to use some of the products on the market to be able to fight back is part of the training many companies provide.

Home invasions is one of the fastest rising threats in some communities and many people are reluctant to have firearms in the home. While the increase in the number of concealed carry permits have also risen, the use of a gun in a personal attack crime is declining and many homeowners would prefer not to have a weapon on hand that may be used against them. For them, personal security and training may involve learning self-defense techniques if they are attacked as well as learning how to use many of the products currently on the market that protect without the use of deadly force.

Most people feel a certain level of security while in their own home, but being ready for anything cannot be a bad thing. For most, a personal attack is something that happens to someone else, and they put off any personal security and training until it is too late.

Learning To Use Security Devices Can Be Time Well Spent

Pepper spray, stun guns and even batons may require some personal security and training in order to be used effectively. It may also be a legal requirement in some states or communities before they can be purchased. Before looking to buy any type of protection device it is advised the state’s attorney general’s office be contacted to insure the legality of such devices in the state in which the person resides.

Many times local law enforcement will offer personal security and training to teach residents how to fight back in a way in which they can reduce the chances of severe injury. Most recommend that when confronted by an attacker with a gun to simply follow their demands instead of trying to disarm the attacker. The theory is that anything the armed attacker wants to take can be replaced, with the exception of the victim’s life. Even instructor’s giving personal security and training try to stress cooperation instead of confrontation.

24 Hour Personal Security Awareness

Fifty years ago, if you were sitting around the dining room table discussing personal security awareness with your neighbors, there is a very good chance you were talking about being robbed or burglarized. Today the umbrella’s scope of what is covered in personal security awareness has grown to include the primary area of computer security and how you protect your private information.

Personal Security Awareness – Mail

Of all the different ways thieves can get their hands on your private personal information, stealing your mail is at the top of the list. Many mail thieves follow the mail carrier around the neighborhood and take mail out of the box immediately after it was left there, so even if you are at home all the time, you should get a PO Box for security purposes.

Personal Security Awareness – Shred Everything

The second most popular way an identity thief gets your private information is by going through your garbage. By shredding everything, you have completely eliminated the possibility that your private information can be stolen, and at the same time you have produced package stuffing material for all those birthday and Christmas presents, as shredded paper makes excellent padding.

Personal Security Awareness – Fence And Camera

For the utmost in security around your home, if you don’t have them already, install a high fence around your home and monitor the complete parameter with security cameras that are camouflaged and positioned so there are no blind spots. The beauty of these systems is that you can monitor your premises from 3,000 miles from home on your laptop computer.

Personal Security Awareness – Getting In And Out Of Your Car

The very first thing you should do when you get in your car is lock the doors. When parking your car, you should make sure that when you are leaving, it will be easy for you to visually inspect all sides of the car for lurking carjackers. Always carry a mobile communication device with you in case of emergencies. It is also a very good idea to know how to drive directly to the police station in case you think you are being followed. Never stop and get out of the car to confront another driver because many carry weapons and have bad intentions.

Personal Security Awareness – Diet And Exercise

The better physical shape your body is in, the more finely tuned your senses are in. Eating a natural diet that is free of all the sugars and toxins that are found in fast foods, will help keep you keenly aware of your personal security 24 hours a day. Being in good physical shape improves your chances of running away from an assailant.

A Personal Security Center Provides Keys To Safety

A personal security center is most valuable in the world today for there are so many dangers. A personal security center will provide for organization of the many tools that people have for safety. People are often threatened by fire, violent crime and medical emergencies. There are tools for each type of danger, and then there are tools including a personal security center for organizing all of the security tools on your computer to keep you and your work safe. A personal security center can be the key point for safety on the computer.

A personal security center can provide help when at home as well as when the occupant of the home is away for business or pleasure. Believe it or not there are many people that you cannot see who would like to hack into your computer for mischief or for their personal gain. A computer owner might not see an attack on their computer when it happens, but the problems caused could appear weeks or months later. The personal security centers on most computers need little or no knowledge of computer systems to install and use these tools.

A Personal Security Center Works Constantly

Someone using a computer might be writing a brilliant speech or paying their bills, but those with a personal security center will be protected silently while they work on their tasks. If a problem occurs while they work, the personal security center might alert the user to the problem or it will solve the problem without interruption. The personal security center usually includes a firewall that will fend off any attack from distant computer hackers. The personal security center will often have a virus blocker that will also work while the user continues his or her tasks. The virus blocker usually detects harmful elements that might be introduced into the computer.

These harmful elements could come from an email sent by a friend unintentionally or from a new computer program. These elements could destroy hours of work and programs on the computer. Another feature is spyware protection. Thieves could try to steal personal information by inserting tools into your system. The tools of the security center should protect you from these thieves. This security could protect you from spam which is sent in great numbers to many computers. Most people do not want this information, and a security system should rid your system of this unwanted material.

Personal Security Certificate No Guarantee Of Qualifications

In order to gain employment in the personal security business you will have to prove you have the education and experience needed to perform the many different duties often associated with such a position. While a personal security certificate may not be one of the main reasons a person learns the personal protection trade, having one will certainly be a benefit in gaining employment in the industry. However, simply having a personal security certificate does not insure a person is qualified, as it will depend on from where the certificate has been earned that determines their qualifications.

Similar to attending classes at the police academy, the graduate may understand the theory behind many of the policies and procedures without having a real life experience in the field. All the education in the world, testified to with a personal security certificate, does not guarantee they will know how to handle any specific crisis that may arise. It also requires experience, typically gained by working with others for a number of years.

There are also different needs in the personal security industry, some might require the certification of weapons and others with the certification of using non-lethal means of controlling a situation. In all cases, a personal security certificate should have been earned by learning how to access and mitigate any potential threats in a wide variety of situations.

Prepare For The Worst And Hope For The Best

Many institutions offering personal security certificate training always teach their students to be ready for anything, but it seems as though there are different types of threats being presented almost on a daily basis. With new types of dangers being presented, it is nearly impossible to plan for every possible scenario, but being able to use deductive reasoning will help the holder of a personal security certificate be able to analyze what needs to be done to handle emergencies quickly and efficiently.

Risk assessment and rapid response are probably the most important part of any personal security certificate training a person can hope for, even if they never have to use that training. If a person can go through their entire career assessing and avoiding danger to the ones they have been hired to protect, it could be said that they had a successful career. It is on thing to be able to move a person out of a danger zone, but quite another thing to help them avoid being in the zone in the first place.

Personal Security Contractors Help Protect People And Information

There are a variety of reasons for an individual to feel threatened and in many cases their feelings are justified, depending on their position in the business world. Many business leaders of well-known companies use the services of personal security contractors to provide protection against potential threats to themselves and their families. However, it is not only the perceived threat to their physical well-being that creates the need for personal security contractors as some of the businesses also help protect their personal information from identity thieves.

If the average person is threatened by the loss of their information, a person in a position of power with a major corporation will also be at risk and assessing those risks is the job of many of the personal security contractors. Insuring their personal data is safe from hackers may be more important that the threat of bodily harm. Having their personal information compromised can have a devastating effect on anyone holding a position of power and they often hire personal security contractors to insure against that possibility.

Many of the personal security contractors not only provide protective services while the individual or their family is appearing in a public place, but also insure their safe transport. Those that feel their lives are genuinely at risk may travel in armored vehicles as well as with an entourage of hired guards to protect them from others that want to do them harm.

Training Required To Provide Personal Security

Too many times personal security contractors have been depicted as gun-toting vigilantes wearing dark glasses and wearing suits as they gather around an individual under threat. In reality, the majority of personal security contractors provide advance scouting of areas to insure the threat is mitigated before the individual’s arrival at any type of public event. Many treat most situations much like the U.S. Secret Service treats the protection of government officials.

It takes training in order to provide the right type of protection for each different type of protection detail as well as an understanding of what the role of personal security contractors involves. It could be forming a protective wall around an executive or only going through paperwork and computer files searching for hidden threats.

Many larger corporations have their own divisions to provide executive protection when some of the top people are traveling in the field, with some of them having come from the ranks of personal security contractors.

A Review Of Personal Security Devices

If you spend any time at all driving or walking through dangerous neighborhoods, or if you are alone much of the time, you should know which personal security devices are most likely to protect you. Personal security devices range from safe, non-lethal alarm-type devices to lethal self-defense devices like firearms. Only you can decide which devices are right for your use.

Alarms

The purpose of a personal security alarm device is to attract attention to yourself and to scare away any would-be intruders or assaulters. The advantage of using an alarm as a personal security device is that it is effective in creating a loud noise and scaring away intruders who are startled by the noise. The disadvantage of using an alarm is that it is virtually useless in a remote area where no one can hear the alarm.

The exception, of course, is a high-tech silent alarm that sends a signal of your location, using GPS technology, to a designated monitor.

Non-Lethal Personal Security Devices

Another useful personal security device is a Taser, pepper spray or mace. The advantage of using pepper spray is that it is non-lethal – meaning it will not cause permanent harm to the assailant. The disadvantage is that you must be in close range to your assailant for the spray to have an effect on them. A taser will cause temporary bodily harm to an assailant, and the assailant will be paralyzed for a short period of time, and in extreme pain.

A disadvantage of any of these non-lethal devices is that the assailant can gain control of the device and use it on you. Obviously, these devices should be used with great caution.

Lethal Personal Security Devices

This category of devices can cause lethal personal bodily harm or even death to your assailant. These devices should be used only in extreme circumstances where using them is a matter of life or death. They are fraught with risk. Certainly, self defense of your person or another person is usually a sufficient defense against a charge of murder or assault with a deadly weapon. However, it is up to a jury whether you used more force than you were entitled to use, and you don’t want to end up in prison for causing a death while defending yourself. On the other hand, you don’t want to be a crime victim!

If you decide to use a lethal device like a gun or a knife to protect yourself, get as much training as you possibly can so you know how to safely use, clean, and store your lethal gear. Getting legal advice is also advised, as lethal force is not considered appropriate to protect one’s property, only one’s life or health. As in the case of non-lethal devices, you run the risk of your assailant getting the device away from you and using it on you. Proceed with caution.

Some Effective Personal Security Devices

With the ever changing times, it is always a good idea to find new ways to protect yourself. In this day and age, when it is not safe to walk on almost any street at night in any town, having an array of personal security devices at your disposal can go a long way to making sure that you and your family remain safe.

Aside from the more potent personal security devices like guns or knives, there are other personal security devices that you can invest in that will bring a good level of security to you and yours while reducing the chance that you could accidentally injure someone else. Most criminals frighten fairly easily while others require direct contact before they will call off an attack so it is a good idea to have a variety of small personal security devices on you at all times to help repel any kind of attacker.

Of course the best personal security device is common sense and common sense says to avoid dark street and alleys at night for your own protection. But beyond that there are these personal security devices.

A personal security device that many people carry is an alarm that makes a very high pitched loud squeal when the button on the alarm is pushed. If you are in an area that is surrounded by people then this sort of personal security device can be extremely effective. If an attacker is causing you harm and you push the button on this little alarm the shrill and loud sound is sure to make them flee with fright. It is always nice to turn the tables on a criminal and making them scared immediately after they just did the same to you is always a good feeling.

Just Whistle

A more basic personal security device that many people carry is a simple referee’s whistle like you would see a football referee carry. The disadvantage is that you don’t always have the time or ability to raise a whistle to your mouth while you are being attacked but having the whistle does bring a feeling of security to the people that carry them.

Many people prefer personal security devices such as taser guns or pepper spray. Understand that there may be laws against buying and using these products where you live so always check with law enforcement before buying these products. The law wants you to be safe but you do not want to be the one taken to jail after you have been attacked.

Personal Security Guard Requires 360-Degree Vision

Government officials, corporate leaders and celebrities are known hire a personal security guard on occasion to protect themselves against the possibility of personal attack. In order to be employed as a personal security guard it takes more than being able to fight off potential attackers and be willing to take a bullet for your employer. It also requires the knowledge and experience to recognize and assess potential risks to the person you are hired to protect.

Not all threats faced by a personal security guard will be obvious and some will be in the form of cyber attacks. Gaining access to an individual’s personal information can be almost as devastating as gaining access to their private residence in order to inflict bodily harm. Being a personal security guard is no longer the glamorous job of hobnobbing with the rich and famous with access to restricted areas, it also requires a thorough understanding of all types of risks.

Risk assessment is probably the number one thing in which a potential personal security guard needs to become thoroughly experienced. Being able to predict a personal or indirect attack that could cause harm to the one they are hired to protect is one of the most important parts of the job. Understanding the types of threats that could be made to their employer will help them better plan for any potential attack.

An Ounce Of Prevention Worth More Than A Pound Of Protection

Very few individuals will hire a personal security guard willing to take a bullet meant for them. They would much rather hire someone that is capable of insuring that bullet is never fired and an experienced personal security guard can insure the safety of their employer without fearing for their own lives as well.

Planning routes for travel as well as providing security of the property on which the individual resides is paramount to the individual’s safety as much as standing between them and a potential threat. While there may be times when a personal security guard is open to danger, depending on the person being protected, in most instances mitigating the dangers before they appear is much more desirable.

Advance warning of all possible threats is often the goal of most personal security guards as they can arrange different ways for their employer to conduct their business. Keeping them out of danger is infinitely more desirable than protecting them from that danger without knowing ahead of time that it exists.

Personal Security Institute Teaches Variety Of Techniques

Before anyone decides to buy personal security products, or begin to offer personal security services, there is a great deal of training that may be required. In many states, even before a person can use pepper spray they have to attend some sort of personal security institute training in order to legally carry it with them. The same is true for some devices such as stun guns and tasers, with some states making it illegal for private individuals to own or use a taser.

This may seem unnecessary to some people, but in reality, it helps to know how to use these devices as well, as how to make sure they are not taken away and used against the victim by the attacker. Learning some self-defense techniques at a personal security institute can not only help with personal protection, but also how to keep from being disarmed by an attacker. No matter how good the device may work, if it is taken away, the victim can suffer even more harm from a personal attack.

However, it is not only about personal protection that moves people to attend a personal security institute. Learning how to detect computer hackers and how to keep them out of your personal or business network can help stop many attempts at fraudulent activity before they begin. Keeping personal information protected can be nearly as important as physical safety in the age of cyber crime.

Awareness Is Chief Learning Advice

While there are many forms of personal protection available and many techniques that can be learned at a personal security institute, the number one priority and learned behavior is being aware of the surroundings. Being able to recognize a potential threat and avoiding it can do more to protect a person from attack than the best self-defense techniques. After all, if the attack can be avoided all together, there is no reason to fear injuries.

By understanding the conditions in which a potential attacker works, such as in dark, isolated areas and staying out of those areas, there may not be a need to worry about going to the nearest personal security institute. However, as the number of person crimes continues to rise, it may be better to have some knowledge ahead of time instead of waiting until after an attack to seek instruction at a personal security institute. It may be better to make a small investment in information that is never needed than to seek the information once it is too late.
