Essential Gardening Products

Gardening products can be found at many different gardening supply stores, catalogs and nurseries. There are certain supplies that gardeners should keep on hand at all times according to gardening tips in magazines and websites. These supplies ensure that the gardener is prepared for most situations that he might encounter during the process of growing his vegetable or flower garden.

Food and Protection

All plants need a bed of nutritious soil to grow in, so gardening products that help in this area are essential to have at all times. Starting a compost pile is one was to have nutritious mulch to place on the garden while preparing it, as well as fortifying it during the year. These compost piles can easily be started with some grass clipping and leaves in one corner of the yard and can be maintained by merely placing more clippings and leaves as well as organic kitchen scraps on it periodically so that there is always decaying matter sinking into and forming the soil beneath the pile. That soil is what is used as mulch. If the gardener does not want to start his own compost pile, there is mulch that can be bought in stores; however it can be quite expensive, depending on the type.

Protection for the plants is another area of gardening product that should be kept in the shed. There are nets that can be placed over new plants that will let in sunlight but keep out insects that might eat the plants. There are pesticides that are specially formulated to kill certain types of insects but not harm the plants or the humans who grow them. In addition, there are pesticides that are made from organic material, so that there are not any foreign chemicals in them that are dangerous to the environment.

Tools

Other important gardening products are the tools needed in gardening. The three most commonly used are shovels, hoes and trowels. These three items help to prepare the soil before the garden is planted by breaking it up so that it is not so compact and allows the roots room to move and breathe. They are also used to dig holes for plants as well as to loosen weeds so that they are easier to pull up. If the garden is a flower garden, then pruners are needed so that dead and diseased branches can be neatly trimmed off in a way that is not damaging to the plant.

The Right Tools: Gardening Accessories

In order to be a successful gardener, there are some gardening accessories and tools that are important to have for the care of the plants in the garden. These gardening products can be purchased at many gardening supply centers, nurseries or gardening catalogs. In addition, there are replacement parts for these tools so that they can remain sharp and in good working order for safety and efficiency purposes.

Types of Products

Shovels are one of the versatile and useful of the gardening accessories that a gardener can have in her tool shed. Gardeners use shovels for digging holes in the garden for planting various plants as well as moving mulch from the compost pile onto the garden. Shovels are useful because of their larger blades that can move more material, spread it out and also has more weight to help break up harder sections of earth that cannot be moved by the smaller trowel.

Trowels are another gardening accessory that is essential to gardeners since they are used for so many things. There are different types of trowels that can be used for various situations and soil conditions that the gardener might encounter. Thin pointed blades are useful for digging holes in the ground where it is very hard soil since the blade slides into it easily, breaking it up. Wider trowels are useful for carrying more material, such as adding potting soil around plants where a shovel is too large to do the job neatly.

Hoes are used at different stages of the gardening process. When a gardener is preparing the garden in the beginning, part of the process is breaking up the soil so that it is aerated, rather than being packed together which is not good for the roots. While shovels might be the gardening accessory of preference for really hard soils, for moderately compacted soil, hoes make quick work of breaking up the soil. In addition, later in the gardening process, hoes also help to loosen weeds so that the gardener can easily pluck them out of the ground from around the plants.

In addition to hoes, rakes are another gardening accessory that is useful for preparing the garden for planting. Rakes can quickly move old plants, leaves and debris out of the gardening area so that the soil is exposed for the hoe to break up. In order to move the debris quickly, instead of having to make many trips with armloads of material, a wheelbarrow is a useful gardening accessory to keep in the tool shed.

Off to a Good Start: Gardening Seeds

For a gardener who wants to start from scratch, there are certain methods to use when gardening seeds that are not used if starting with seedlings or more mature plants. In order to garden seeds, there are certain gardening accessories that are needed in order to be successful. Most gardening tips say to garden seeds indoors so that the seeds have a chance to germinate and grow for a time before having to face not only the elements outside, but also the creatures that can eat them and damage them, such as insects, birds and deer.

Steps to Starting Seeds

The first step to gardening seeds is to decide what types of plants to grow in the garden and then purchase those seeds from a reliable supplier, such as a gardening catalogue, nursery or gardening supply store. Most types of seeds can be found this way without having to be special ordered. If it is a rarer or exotic species of plant, then it may have to be special ordered by the seed supply company. In addition, the gardener needs to decide if she wants to do organic gardening, and if so, if she wants to make sure the seeds she purchases are organic as well. Organic seeds have to be purchased through an organic seed company in most cases since typical gardening supply stores and nurseries do not carry them

The next step to gardening seeds is to decide what type of soil to use. There is plenty of potting soil that is readily available, but when potting seeds, it is important for the soil to be high quality so that the seeds have enough nutrients for good growth. The soil should also drain well yet hold moisture so that the seeds can get just the right amount of water. If the gardener wants to do organic seed gardening, then the potting soil needs to be organic, with no foreign chemicals used to add the nutrients. This is usually a little more expensive than the other potting soils.

Containers of all different sizes can be used to garden seeds as long as they are able to drain. Egg cartons and butter containers can be used as long as there are holes in the bottom so that the water can fully drain out. In addition, these containers need to be washed out well before planting the seeds in them to prevent mold or bacteria from contaminating and killing the seeds. The best way to do this is to wash them out and then disinfect with a bleach solution.

Finally, sunlight indoors is usually too weak to adequately garden seeds so an artificial light source must be used. Fluorescent lights should be used in order to promote strong and healthy seed growth, whether it is rows of lights or a regular light fixture with fluorescent bulbs in it.

Choosing the Best Plants: Gardening Nurseries

Gardening nurseries are some of the best places to find gardening seeds, seedlings, mature plants and also wonderful places to seek advice about any type of gardening problem that might be encountered. Sometimes gardening nurseries can be expensive, especially when compared to gardening catalogues where there can be some wonderful sales and offers on various gardening supplies. However, gardening nurseries usually provide that personal touch that is needed when seeking out just the perfect plants for a garden. In addition, they will usually guarantee the more expensive plants up to a certain length of time because they are experts in the gardening field.

Seeds or Plants

Talking to a professional in a gardening nursery can help a gardener to decide whether starting seeds or choosing mature plants are the best option according to what he wants to do in his garden. Gardening nurseries usually supply seeds, seedlings and mature plants, so the options are usually wide open. One part of a gardening nursery is usually a greenhouse where the seeds can be started in a much protected environment so that they can gain strength and be planted as seedlings with more assurance of success, especially for beginning gardeners.

Gardening nurseries also provide exotic types of plants that have to be grown in a greenhouse environment. Some gardening nurseries specialize in one particular area of gardening, such as only vegetables and fruits, or only rose bushes, but most nurseries sell a more varied supply of plants and seeds. The workers in the nurseries can usually advise the gardeners what types of plants work the best together, which ones are annuals or perennials, when certain types of flowers bloom, and what fruits and vegetables grow best in that particular climate.

In addition to plants and seeds, gardening nurseries also usually sell some of the other supplies needed to keep the plants and seeds healthy such as mulch, fertilizer and pesticides. Nursery workers can usually give great advice on what types of these different products work best depending on the problem being encountered. In addition, there are organic gardening nurseries that specialize in all natural growing techniques and products so that no foreign chemicals are used either in the mulches or pesticides, or in growing the plants or producing the seeds that they sell in the store. Organic gardening nurseries can also advise gardeners on how to start their own compost piles and convert their gardening style to organic.

Plants and Gardening: How to Choose a Garden

There are so many different types of plants in gardening it can be an overwhelming choice for anyone when going into a gardening nursery to choose plants for their garden. There are different categories of plants, some of which can be mixed together, especially in landscape gardening, to create the various effects desired by the gardener. In addition, there are certain plants in gardening that can be mixed together in gardens to help each other out, such as with pests, or attracting ‘good’ insects to help with fertilization or pest issues.

Types

One category of plants in gardening is roses, which are some of the most coveted flowers in the gardening world. Rose gardens are beautiful and there are many different varieties to choose from that grow well according to the different climates. For instance, most roses enjoy full sunlight for the majority of the day, however most varieties of white roses tend to enjoy shade for at least the afternoon hours in order to grow to potential.

Another category of plants in gardening are the annuals or bi-annuals, which only grow for a season before they have to be replaced. These plants are usually used as filler plants to accent the focal points in a landscape garden. Since they only grow for one or two seasons, they can be replaced with the same or other types of annuals so that the look of the garden also changes from season to season.

Perennials are plants that come up from season to season and bloom at different times of year. They are a fun category of plants in gardening because if chosen correctly, a gardener can have a garden of flowers where something is blooming during practically every season of the year.

Plants in gardening also include grasses that can be used to line the edges of gardens or as filler to keep out the weeds around the various other plants and flowers. Vines can also be used as filler in gardens, which are also nice if there is a wall or trellis that the vines can climb on, creating a nice backdrop for the garden.

Besides flowering plants and filler, there are different kinds of fruit and vegetable gardening plants to choose from. Some of these plants can also be very decorative, depending on the time that they are blooming. Shrubs are another gardening plant that can be used to line gardens or be used as a backdrop in a garden setting.

Creating a Piece of Art through Landscape Gardening

Landscape gardening provides an artistic outlet for gardeners that other types of gardening do not. Landscape gardening allows the gardener to plan the flow of the yard so that every piece of it accents the others and work together to create a beautiful painting of live color and texture through the plants and gardening accents used. In addition, the landscape gardens change in form during the different seasons of the year so that new annuals can be added during the different times of year to create a new look to the yard throughout the year.

Planning

Landscape gardening takes a lot of planning and research in order to produce the desired effect. The great thing in working with plants is that they grow and change and have to be replaced, so a mistake at one point is quickly forgotten in a new season of the year. In addition, nature’s palette of colors really goes together in surprising combinations that would not typically be used in other design situations, such as fashion or interior design. However, it nature, somehow the colors blend perfectly into a beautiful garden that is magnificent to behold.

The first thing to think about when planning landscape gardening is what the flow and pattern of the garden is going to be, which is normally called creating the ‘bones’ of the garden. Many gardeners take the layout of the house and yard and draw in the concept of the landscape gardens before actually laying it out with the various materials, such as path work. Other landscape gardeners are able to picture the design in their heads so that they do not have to lay it out on paper before creating the garden bones through paths and trees that form the outlines of the different parts of the landscape garden.

The next step is to decide on the focal points of the landscape garden; in other words, where does the gardener want a viewer’s eyes drawn when he is looking at the garden. This can be done in a variety of ways through the use of color, texture and size of the various plants that will be used. Larger and bolder types of plants and flowers are usually used as focal points in landscape gardens since they naturally lend themselves to that task. Once the focal points are decided on, then the accent or filler plants can be chosen so that they accent the focal points through the textures and colors that they add to the landscape garden.

Getting Started: Gardening Supplies

New gardeners often need a ‘how to’ guide in order to get started in gardening, especially if they are starting from scratch, rather than landscape gardening where the plants are already grown, wanting to grow their garden from seeds. It is often easier to get seeds started inside since there are less insects and animals that could steal the seeds or disturb the soil where the seeds are planted. In addition, until the seeds have gotten a good start in growing so that they have more of a sturdy root base and more mature leaves, they are also very susceptible to the weather, insects and other animals who love to munch on new seedlings.

Starting Seeds

There are several types of gardening supplies that are needed in order to grow seeds from scratch. First the new seeds will need a solid base in which to grow that is full of nutrients that will help them to mature and be healthy. The best soil to use is potting mix which tends to hold water well, yet still give the drainage needed for potted plants, which is important for the seeds. Potting mix is also full of nutrients that the soil from outside is unlikely to have on its own without being mixed with a strong mulch base. Even with good mulch, potting soil is still the best gardening supply for starting seeds.

The next gardening supply that is needed is some sort of container or containers in which to plant the seeds. These containers do not have to be bought at the store; they can be containers that formerly held food products or other supplies, such as egg cartons or butter containers. If the gardening supplies were formerly used for other purposes, it is important that they be well cleaned before use with the seeds since any types of mold can kill the seeds before they have a chance to grow. A strong bleach solution is usually the best answer to cleaning the containers and killing all possible molds or bacteria.

Plastic bags or some other type of cover that is see through so that light can get to the seeds is another important gardening supply for starting seeds since it creates a mini-greenhouse in which the seeds can get their start. The plastic keeps the moisture and heat in so that it creates the humid, warm environment that new seeds flourish in. Besides these gardening supplies, the only other things needed are the seeds to be planted and the water and light source for them to grow.

So Many Gardening Ideas

Gardening books, magazines and websites can all give a beginning gardener great gardening ideas. In addition, talking to experienced gardeners in gardening supply shops and nurseries can also give many helpful tips and gardening ideas to a novice gardener, even such things as what gardening supplies are best to use.

Beginning gardeners need to decide what type of garden that they want to plant. The main choice is between a fruit or vegetable garden or a flower or otherwise decorative garden. Planting a vegetable or fruit garden is more straight forward as far as gardening ideas go than is a decorative or flower garden. Gardening ideas for a fruit or vegetable garden usually encompass what types of plants grow well in different climates, tips to growing larger produce, and keeping the plants healthy through fertilizing and pesticide help.

Decorative Gardens

Gardening ideas for decorative gardens have more facets to them since there are so many different ways to use gardens as a decorative aspect to any house or apartment. One of the gardening ideas for decorative gardens is to use large plants as the focal points of the various decorative gardens in a front or back yard. They should be large flowering, large leafed, or tall statured plants so that they stand out above all the rest and naturally draw a person’s eye to them, thus becoming the focal point of the garden.

Another gardening idea for decorative gardens has to do with creating the ‘bones’ of the garden, which means the outlines of where the garden is going to go. This can be done by using different bordering materials such as wood and stone, creating paths to, from and between gardens, as well as utilizing the trees and bushes that are naturally part of a yard’s landscape.

Once the focal point plants are decided upon and the bones of the garden are laid out, then gardening ideas move to the different types of filler plants and flowers that can be utilized to create the color and texture of the garden. These plants and flowers should be used to highlight the focal points of the garden rather than take over the garden in their busy-ness. The great thing about working with the colors in nature is that colors that might clash in clothing styles or wall colors look great together when they are in a garden. For instance, bold reds and pastel pinks do not usually get put together in clothes, but in a garden, the pinks can serve to highlight the bold red flowers so that they stand out in a more dramatic affect.

A Relaxing and Rewarding Pastime: Gardening

Gardening is a pastime that young and old alike can participate in. There are many different gardening books, magazines and websites available to give the beginning gardener some gardening ideas, as well as forums for the avid gardener to share ideas and get feedback on any problems or concerns that he or she might have. There are many different types of gardens to choose from so that practically every taste can be matched to a particular garden, such as decorative gardens, rose gardens, vegetable gardens and even fruit gardens.

Getting Started

There are a few basic tools that every gardener needs in order to get started in gardening, whether it is a traditional outside garden or a container garden that can be maintained inside. One item is a small shovel that can be used to dig holes to plant young seedlings or to loosen the earth around more mature plants to give them some air. Another item is some clippers or pruning shears in order to trim off old or diseased branches for the health of the plant. Traditional gardening also requires a larger shovel and a hoe in order to till the soil before planting in preparation for the garden.

In addition to these tools there are other supplies that are useful to gardeners as different times during the gardening process. One item is fertilizer which can be bought at any gardening supply store. There are different types of fertilizers, from organic mulch which is all natural, to fertilizers that are fortified with different vitamins and minerals that specific plants might need depending on the soil that they are planted in.

Besides fertilizer, gardening also requires that some sort of pesticide be kept on hand in case of insect problems during the growing process. There are also different types of insect control methods, from using fine netting that keeps out insects and is placed over plants, to pesticides that are made organically, to more traditional pesticides that can be specialized to the type of insect problem that the gardener is facing. There are also books and other resources that explain how to utilize the ‘good’ insects more effectively and even attract them to the garden so that they can protect the plants by eating the harmful insects.

The fun part of the gardening process is choosing the types of plants for the garden and to finally get to work, planting and watering, digging in the earth and otherwise enjoying the gardening process. As the plants grow up, either blooming or producing fruit, or even just growing to maturity as ground cover, the gardening process is rewarding to the gardener as the fruit of her hands prospers.
