Crime And Popcorn

The other day I found an article on some thieves that ransacked a suburban home while devastating the house and all its belongings at the same time.   This thief was caught on a security camera ransacking the home.  The criminals broke in through the back door while the owners of the house were away; they went on to use the weekend to load up vans full of the owner’s belongings.   The home is in a rural location with many trees surrounding the home so that neighbors were unable to see what was going on.  Although there were alarms and other security measures, they did not deter these criminals in any meaningful way.

The sad thing about this story is that the burglars actually had the audacity to make themselves lunch while robbing the place.  The popcorn machine was even employed to make the thieves a nice snack to eat while committing their felony.   You can see them on camera casually throwing popcorn at each others mouths while robbing the house.

When your house is robbed, it can be difficult to deal with and it is even more so when you see the thieves have actually gotten a kick out of the thievery.   Sadly, the thieves that committed this crime have yet to be apprehended, but maybe they will be soon.   Until then, here are a few tips you can use to help secure your home.

The first thing you should do it to become friends with your neighbors.   Friends that live close by can easily pop in on your house for a quick check up while you are away.   Make sure they know not to confront any thieves, they may have weapons and you do not want your friends to get hurt.  They should be told to call the police and then to contact you.   Trained offices will be able to deal with criminals more effectively than your friends.

Next, you can always get a powerful security system.  Ensure that your system is always up to date.   The victims in the article had a state of the art system, but it was not up to date and the thieves knew how to quickly tear it apart.   Sadly, the thieves were so skilled they managed to turn on the popcorn maker and disable the alarm before it could sound.

Security cameras are a fantastic way to provide surveillance.   You’ll need to ensure that you can access these cameras via the web so you can look in on them though.   Had the owners of this house been able to check their cameras before they got back, they would have been able to see the looters and to report them before they got a chance to even think about using their popcorn popper.
