Do-It-Yourself: Make Angel Eyes LED Light Rings

LED lights not only appear cool, they’re also environmentally friendly, cost-efficient, and last longer than numerous bulbs available on the market. Learn to make angel eye rings for your automobile headlights using LED light bulbs.

Difficulty: Moderate. You’ll have to use a soldering gun, drill and Makita tools or other power tools for this job. Ask for assistance if this is the first time you’re dealing with these specialty tools.

You will need: LED light bulbs (2x 3.6 v, 20mA), resistor (270 ohms), small blind rod (lightweight aluminum replacement rod), 24-gauge stranded line, solder gun and solder, Hitachi power tools with cut-off wheel attachment, drill and just drill bit #150, pliers for cutting wires, reflective tape, translucent tape/painter’s tape, aluminum foil, heat-shrink tube, jar cover (exactly the same diameter as the ring), scissors, 12 V regulated power supply, oven.

Mold the Ring

To begin with, estimate the diameter of your head lights. We’ll be utilizing a 4-inch diameter circle for this instruction. After calculating, get a small blind rod. One mini rod creates two rings. For a 4″ diameter bulb, the rod must be 12.5″ long (use this procedure: Length = 3.14 x diameter). Add on about 2 extra inches just for handles. Cut the rod using Hitachi tool with a cut-off cycle attachment.

To enhance ring brightness, we will need to make small cuts along the flat (back) side of the circle. All these cuts will refract illumination toward the front side for greater perceptibility. Use the Dremel equipment to make cuts 1.5 mm apart from others. Continue preparing cuts until you get the other side of the cycle.

Drill the Hole

We’re now about to join the LED light bulbs. Drill a trap on each ending portion of the rod to go with a LED light bulb inside. Use drill bit #150, and set to 6000 RPM. To avoid the rod from melting, take out the bit as you go to let it cool. Repeat the method until you get a LED light bulb-sized gap. The LED light bulb needs to tightly fit.

Take the LED light bulb making the hole even more transparent by putting slight amount of clear nail polish inside the hole. This allows substantially more light to go through. Wait for the polish to dry off before re-inserting the LED bulb. Check out the bulb with a 12 V controlled power supply.

To entrap the LED light and make it evident even in daytime, use aluminum foil or even reflective tape. Enclose the foil around the uncut part of the ring and shelter with heat-shrink tube. Heat the tubing in its place. Track down the ring on reflective tape and just cut out. Take out and then stick the tape on the other side of the ring.

Wire the LED lamps

Make use of a resistor (270 ohms). Fasten with electrical wire the two LED light bulbs in a series connection by hooking up the negative leg of one LED bulb to the positive leg of the other LED bulb. Take off one end of a 24-gauge string and wrap it around the negative leg of the first LED bulb. Attach into place using soldering gun. Take off the other end of the same cord and wrap it all-around the positive terminal of the second LED. Solder straight to place.

Shorten a second wire and wrap it around the negative terminal of the second LED, and solder all together. Bring the end of the second cable back to the other part of the ring. Tape the two leads together at the back side of the ring with painter’s blue tape. Take off the LED bulb terminal legs. At this time you have a single positive then single negative terminal on one side of the ring. Try it out by means of a power supply.
