Simple Home Lighting Ideas

When it comes to the look and ambiance of a home, lighting can make an incredible difference. Of course, ordinary lighting in terms of lamps and overhead lights can be found in most homes. But most don’t realize that the lighting in a home can completely change the feel and mood. Lighting allows you to achieve a warm ambiance instantly, without changing any of your décor. Certain types of lighting will not only add to the look of your home but can serve differing purposes as well.

Light Up Your Living Area
Assess what type of lighting you have in your living or family room. Chances are, you have a few lamps sitting on a end table and overhead lights, or maybe even a ceiling fan with lights. Lamps are always a part of the home decorating scheme, and you can find some really gorgeous ones. The right lamps can really enhance the beauty of any room.

See if any areas in your living room could use some special attention. With some small spotlights, you can make a trophy, a plant, or a beautiful antique collectible the focal point of the room. The spotlights can simply be placed on a surface surrounding the area. Another great option is overhead lights that are equipped to dim, allowing you to occasionally set a romantic mood.

Other Areas That Deserve Special Lighting
The kitchen has long been a favorite place for everyone to gather. It’s not uncommon to find family, close friends, and company gathered around the dining table, drinking tea and coffee or simply enjoying each other’s company. The kitchen is one room that needs bright lighting, since a good deal of cooking and cleaning up are done in this room.

You might consider some small decorative lamps on a side buffet in the dining room-perhaps with a dimmer switch so that you can adjust the lighting. You may find yourself wanting to create a romantic dinner for two. Then you can dim the lights, and with the addition of a few candles, generate the atmosphere you desire.

Another area where you want several lighting sources is the bedroom. A good overhead light will let you see clearly inside the drawers of your oak dresser, closets, and other places. A lamp on the bedside table is convenient if you read before turning in for the night. Another great lighting touch for the bedroom is a very small candle lamp that creates an amber glow, perfect for those cold winter nights when you want to cuddle up with your significant other.

What About the Bathroom?
A source of bright light is a definite must in the bathroom. You need to be able to see clearly in this room, as men shave and many women apply makeup in here. This room is another great place to install a dimmer switch and then set a few candles around-especially if you have a large garden tub. Soaking in an oversized tub with delicate lighting can help the stresses of the day float away. And the candles will add a luscious fragrance to the room, further helping ease away any stress and anxiety you may be feeling.

Not only is lighting useful, but it can completely transform the atmosphere of any room. Highlight special areas of your rooms using proper lighting, you can create a warm and welcoming ambiance in your home.

How Clean is Your Bathroom?

How to clean your bathroom using a natural product as vinegar

Your kitchen is reputed to be the most germ-ridden room in your house. But bathrooms can also harbor an abundance of harmful bacteria and germs clinging to towels, taps, door handles and toilet bowls.

Here are just a few pointers that I hope will help you to keep your bathroom clean and healthy.

Toothbrushes

We tend to group all of our family toothbrushes together in a beaker above the sink, which isn’t a good idea. But, ideally, toothbrushes should be kept apart, well away from toilets and sinks where they may be splashed with water. And always change your toothbrush, or the head on your electric toothbrush, around every three or four months.

Towels

Ideally you should provide separate towels for each family member. This will reduce the chance that a virus wll be passed from one person to another. Its also a good idea to color code your bath and hand towels and ensure that your family knows which is which.

Soap

Some studies have suggested that hand wash dispensers are more hygienic than bars of soap. Children need to be encouraged to wash their hands whenever they visit the bathroom and a liquid soap dispenser can be good for this. Also, be sure to use a liquid soap dispenser in any bathroom that might be used by non-family members.

Toilet Flushing

Make sure that your family flush the toilet with the lid down on the toilet seat. The flushing action causes small polluted water particles from the toilet to be thrown into the air, landing on surrounding surfaces, taps, towels and handles. Keeping the lid down will reduce this considerably. Why not invest in novelty toilet seat that your family will want to close every time they use it.

Disinfect and Clean

Its a good idea to clean and bleach your toilet bowl at least twice a week. Toilets should be kept as clean as possible. Be aware that germs will grow in shower heads and taps if they have not been run for a while so it’s a good idea to let them run hot for a while to clean them out. You should disinfect all surfaces and handles in your bathroom at least once a week and change your towels often.
